I came to exhibiting fairly late in life at the age of 56, so I am keen to do a lot more while I still can! I am not a member of a model railway club - if there was one more local I would be tempted, but at the moment I am a sole operator. I am based near Caernarfon in North Wales, nice for all the narrow-gauge railways, but a bit out on a limb when it comes to travelling to exhibitions. I am happy to bring my layouts to exhibitions in North/Mid-Wales and North-West England for minimal or no expenses, although, if offered, they are, of course, welcome! I can also consider exhibitions further afield, but may need some assistance with accommodation, but I don't have expensive tastes! I am, of course, happy to hear from proposals from ANY exhibition managers.
My approach to exhibiting is to endeavour to show a layout that is attractively presented, well lit, with sufficient well-maintained stock to allow a varied representation of typical trains to be run, for the interest and enjoyment of the paying visitor. I always clean the track and locomotive wheels thoroughly before every exhibition, and lubricate mechanisms where required. My aim is to show that an "average" modeller can produce a layout that can entertain and encourage others to give it a try. I try to make every viewer feel welcome, greeting them and responding to questions as helpfully as I can. But whilst chatting I do my best to keep something running on the layout at all times. I especially try to encourage younger viewers to follow the hobby, and if circumstances permit, and with their adult companions permission, I am happy to show them behind the scenes and let them spend some time on the controllers.
